Every year, we support thousands of people in the UK and around the world with physical and learning disabilities to fulfill their potential and live the lives they choose. We work to create a society in which every person is equally valued. We believe that people with disabilities should have the freedom to live their lives the way they choose - with the opportunity and support to live independently, to contribute economically and to participate fully in society. This belief is at the heart of everything we do. For over 65 years, we have supported people with disabilities in many different ways to ensure that their opinions are heard, their values respected and needs met. This includes providing care in people’s own homes, in supported rented accommodation, in residential homes, in day centres and through respite services. We make a difference to the lives of thousands of people by supporting them to develop skills through our employment, education, enterprise, health, volunteering and digital inclusion projects. We campaign alongside people with disabilities to bring about changes for the better, and to challenge ignorance and unfairness in society. Internationally, we are part of a Global Alliance of Leonard Cheshire charities that works to improve the lives of disabled people in 54 countries. Activities: At Leonard Cheshire, we value the role our Volunteers have in our services throughout the United Kingdom. Due to the length of the placements for overseas volunteers (12 months), volunteers have the opportunity to acquire a range of skills, improve their English, enjoy the best of British culture and life, and develop fulfilling working relationships with our residents, staff and local volunteers which often develop into long-term friendships. Volunteers help support our staff teams in providing an active, involving and stimulating environment for our residents. Through our volunteers, disabled people in our care homes are able to access their local community services and social opportunities more easily and regularly, thus improving their independence and quality of life. This means that in their roles overseas volunteers are engaging in a wide range of activities both inside and outside the home. Thorough training on working with vulnerable adults is provided to all our volunteers, and Leonard Cheshire staff helps volunteers during the induction process to understand each individual. Risk assessments ensure that volunteers are not asked to contribute outside of their capability or boundaries. Volunteers acquire a range of knowledge, skills and experience including a greater understanding of the issues affecting disabled people. They gain improved interpersonal skills and the ability to interact with a wide range of people. There will also be an opportunity to learn about the charity.
